What is Mixture

A mixture is a substance made up of two or more elements or compounds mixed in any ratio. The components of a mixture do not chemically react with each other, and they retain their individual properties. Mixtures can be classified into two types: Homogeneous mixture – In this type, the components are uniformly mixed and cannot be seen separately. Example: salt dissolved in water. Heterogeneous mixture – In this type, the components are not uniformly mixed and can often be seen separately. Example: sand and water. One common example of a gaseous mixture is air. Air contains several gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapour, hydrogen, helium and other gases.

Mixtures and Methods of Separation

In our daily life we come across many substances that are made up of more than one component. These substances are called mixtures. For example, air, soil, seawater, and tea are all mixtures. A mixture is formed when two or more elements or compounds are combined together in any proportion without undergoing a chemical change. The substances present in a mixture retain their own properties and can usually be separated by simple physical methods. Scientists and people in everyday life use different methods of separation to separate useful substances from mixtures or to remove unwanted materials. Some common methods include winnowing, sieving, sedimentation, decantation, filtration, evaporation, crystallization, sublimation, centrifugation, and distillation. These techniques are based on differences in properties such as size, weight, solubility, and boiling point.

How is the iron blade in tools fixed to the wooden handle?

Many tools such as hammers and axes have iron blades attached to wooden handles. The iron blade usually has a ring that is slightly smaller than the wooden handle. To fix the handle, the iron ring is heated. When heated, iron expands and the ring becomes larger. The wooden handle is then inserted into the ring. When the iron cools down, it contracts and fits tightly around the handle. This method ensures that the blade remains firmly attached to the handle.

Examples of Reversible and Irreversible Changes

Let us identify some changes: Cooking of food – Irreversible changeMelting of wax – Reversible changeSouring of milk – Irreversible changeDissolving salt in water – Reversible change (salt can be obtained again by evaporation)

ScienceClass 6CBSE

Name two changes which can be controlled.

Some changes can be controlled to prevent damage or loss. Two examples of such changes are: Rusting of ironRusting can be controlled by painting, oiling, or galvanizing iron objects.Spoiling of foodFood spoilage can be controlled by refrigeration, drying, or adding preservatives. These methods help in increasing the life of materials and food.

ScienceClass 6CBSE

Define pasteurization.

Pasteurization is the process of heating milk at a specific temperature for a certain period of time to kill harmful microorganisms. This method helps to prevent spoilage and keeps milk safe for drinking for several days. Pasteurization was developed by the scientist Louis Pasteur. Today it is widely used in dairy industries to preserve milk and other beverages.

What is solution?

A solution is a mixture formed when a substance dissolves in a liquid. The substance that dissolves is called the solute, and the liquid in which it dissolves is called the solvent. For example, when salt is dissolved in water, a salt solution is formed. In this mixture, salt is the solute and water is the solvent. Solutions are usually clear and uniform throughout.

ScienceClass 6CBSE

What are reversible changes? Give two examples of changes, which can be reversed.

Reversible Changes Reversible changes are those changes that can be undone or reversed to get back the original substance. In such changes, the substance can return to its previous state by changing the conditions. ExamplesIce changing into water and water freezing into iceWhen ice is heated, it melts into water. When the water is cooled, it turns back into ice.Stretching a rubber bandWhen we stretch a rubber band and release it, it returns to its original shape. These changes are temporary and reversible.

ScienceClass 6CBSE

Define periodic change.Write 2 examples of periodic change.

A periodic change is a change that occurs at regular intervals of time. These changes repeat themselves after a definite period. Examples of Periodic Changes Phases of the moon – The shape of the moon changes regularly over a month. Heartbeat – The heart beats continuously at regular intervals to pump blood throughout the body. Periodic changes are important in many natural systems.

ScienceClass 6CBSE

Give an example of natural change.

A natural change is a change that occurs naturally without human involvement. These changes occur due to natural processes. Example Germination of seeds is a natural change. When a seed gets proper water, air, and sunlight, it grows into a plant. This process happens naturally in nature. Other examples include rainfall, growth of plants, and changes in seasons.

ScienceClass 6CBSE

What do you mean Chemical Changes

A chemical change is a change in which one or more new substances are formed with different properties from the original substances. In chemical changes, the composition of the substance changes permanently. Chemical changes are usually permanent and irreversible. Once the change takes place, it is very difficult or impossible to bring the substance back to its original form. Examples of Chemical Changes Burning of cooking gas Rusting of iron Ripening of fruits Explosion of crackers For example, when a cracker burns, it releases heat, light, and smoke. These are new substances formed during the reaction. Therefore, the explosion of a cracker is a chemical change. Difference Between Physical Change and Chemical Change Physical Change Chemical Change Only physical properties such as shape, size, or state change. Chemical composition and properties change. No new substance is formed. One or more new substances are formed. Usually reversible. Usually irreversible. Examples Physical changes: Conversion of water into ice Tearing of paper Chemical changes: Burning of cooking gas Ripening of fruits

ScienceClass 6CBSE

What do you mean by a physical change?

A physical change is a change in which only the physical properties of a substance change. These properties include shape, size, state, or appearance. In a physical change, no new substance is formed, and the original substance remains the same. Physical changes are often temporary and can usually be reversed. For example, when ice melts into water, the substance remains water in both cases; only the state changes from solid to liquid. Examples of Physical Changes Melting of ice into water Tearing of paper Dissolving sugar in water Stretching of a rubber band In all these examples, the basic substance remains the same and no new substance is produced.

Why are more than one dish preferred in a single meal? Write a reason other than taste.

More than one dish is preferred in a single meal because the body needs different kinds of nutrients to stay healthy. No single food item can provide all the nutrients required by the body. For example, rice or wheat provides carbohydrates for energy, pulses provide proteins for growth and repair of tissues, vegetables and fruits provide vitamins and minerals, and some foods provide fats that give additional energy. By eating a variety of dishes in one meal, we can obtain a balanced diet, which is necessary for proper growth, strong immunity, and overall good health. Therefore, having multiple dishes in a meal helps ensure that the body receives all the essential nutrients it needs. Top of Form

Based upon your daily observations, tell about the food eaten by a squirrel, lizard, and a mosquito.

Different animals eat different kinds of food depending on their nature and body structure. A squirrel mainly eats grains, nuts, fruits, and seeds. It is commonly seen collecting food such as peanuts, acorns, and grains from trees and fields. A lizard is an insect-eating animal. It feeds on small insects such as flies, mosquitoes, ants, and beetles. Lizards help control insect populations in houses and gardens. A mosquito feeds by sucking blood from humans and animals. Female mosquitoes require blood to obtain nutrients for producing eggs, while male mosquitoes usually feed on plant juices. These examples show how animals depend on different sources of food for their survival.

What are sprouted seeds? How are they made to eat?

Sprouted seeds are seeds that have begun to grow into small seedlings after being soaked in water. During sprouting, the seed absorbs water and starts the process of germination. A tiny shoot appears from the seed, which indicates that the seed has started growing. To prepare sprouted seeds for eating, first take seeds such as moong or chana and wash them properly. Then soak them in water for several hours or overnight. After soaking, remove the water and keep the seeds wrapped in a moist cloth or in a covered container for about one or two days. During this time, small sprouts grow from the seeds. These sprouted seeds are very healthy and can be eaten raw as a salad or lightly boiled. Salt, lemon juice, onions, tomatoes, and spices may be added to improve the taste. Sprouted seeds are rich in vitamins, proteins, and minerals, making them an excellent nutritious food.

Is the flower’s nectar available all through the year?

No, flower nectar is not available throughout the year. Nectar is a sweet liquid produced by flowers to attract insects, birds, and other animals that help in pollination. However, flowers bloom only during certain seasons of the year, depending on the type of plant and environmental conditions. When flowers bloom, they produce nectar for a limited period of time. After pollination takes place and the flowers wither away, nectar is no longer available. Therefore, nectar can only be found when plants are in their flowering stage. Different plants flower in different seasons, so nectar may be available at different times of the year from different plants. Bees and other nectar-feeding animals depend on this seasonal availability of flowers to collect food.

How will you make tasty snacks from moong or chana?

Tasty and healthy snacks can be prepared from moong (green gram) or chana (chickpeas) by the process of sprouting. Sprouting increases the nutritional value of the seeds and makes them easier to digest. To prepare this snack, first wash the moong or chana thoroughly with clean water. Then soak the seeds in a bowl of water for about 8–10 hours or overnight. During soaking, the seeds absorb water and become soft. After soaking, drain the water and keep the seeds in a clean cloth or container for one or two days. During this time, small white shoots begin to grow from the seeds. These are called sprouts. Once sprouting occurs, the seeds are ready to eat. The sprouts can be eaten raw as a salad or lightly boiled. To make them tastier, salt, lemon juice, chopped onions, tomatoes, and spices can be added. Sprouted moong or chana snacks are very nutritious because they contain proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which are beneficial for good health.

Which cereal fields have rows of plants? Name at least one.

Many cereal crops are grown in fields in an organized manner with rows of plants. This arrangement helps farmers take better care of the crops and makes it easier to irrigate the fields, remove weeds, and harvest the crops. Two common cereal crops that are grown in rows are wheat and paddy (rice). In wheat fields, seeds are sown in straight rows so that each plant gets enough sunlight, water, and nutrients from the soil. This method also helps farmers move easily between rows for farming activities. Similarly, in paddy cultivation, rice seedlings are often transplanted into fields in neat rows. This practice helps the plants grow properly and increases the yield. Growing crops in rows is therefore an important agricultural method that improves crop management and productivity.

How many ingredients are needed to prepare a dish of boiled rice?

To prepare a simple dish of boiled rice, only two main ingredients are required: rice and water. Rice is a cereal grain that serves as the main food ingredient, while water is used to cook and soften the grains. The preparation process is very simple. First, the rice grains are washed with clean water to remove dust and impurities. Then the washed rice is placed in a pot with an adequate amount of water. The mixture is heated on a stove or fire. As the temperature increases, the water begins to boil and the rice grains absorb the water. During this process, the rice grains soften and swell, turning into cooked rice. Sometimes, a small amount of salt or ghee may be added to improve the taste, but the basic dish of boiled rice can be made using only rice and water. Boiled rice is a staple food in many countries and provides energy and carbohydrates necessary for the body.
