Answer

Protoxylem and protophloem are the first-formed primary vascular tissues during plant development.

Protoxylem:

  • Definition: The earliest-formed primary xylem
  • Cell characteristics:Narrow vessels/tracheids with annular or spiral thickening
  • Flexibility: Extensible walls (allows elongation during primary growth)
  • Location:
    • Stems (Dicot): Towards pith (endarch)
    • Roots: Towards periphery (exarch)
  • Fate: Often crushed or obliterated as stem/root matures

Protophloem:

  • Definition: The earliest-formed primary phloem
  • Cell characteristics:Narrow sieve tubes with smaller diameter
  • Location: Towards the outer side of vascular bundles
  • Fate: Becomes non-functional and crushed by later-formed metaphloem

Developmental Sequence:

Primary Growth:

  • Procambium (meristem) → Protoxylem/Protophloem → Metaxylem/Metaphloem

Secondary Growth (Dicots):

  • Vascular cambium → Secondary xylem and secondary phloem

NEET Tip: Exarch vs. endarch condition is a key distinguishing feature between root and stem anatomy.
