Answer

Conjunctive Tissue (also called connective tissue) is a component of the ground tissue system in roots.

Location: In angiosperm roots with radial vascular bundles:

  • Located in the patches between xylem and phloem
  • Since xylem and phloem occupy different radii, the intervening spaces contain conjunctive tissue

Cellular Composition:

  • Composed entirely of parenchymatous cells
  • Living, thin-walled cells
  • May contain stored starch grains

Functions:

  1. Lateral conduction of water and minerals
  2. Storage of nutrients
  3. Potential for dedifferentiation into vascular cambium during secondary growth (in dicots)

Developmental Importance: During secondary growth in dicot roots:

  • Conjunctive tissue cells become meristematic
  • Form part of the wavy vascular cambium ring
