Difference Between GPA and CGPA

Understanding how your academic performance is measured is important—especially when applying for college admissions, scholarships, or jobs. Two terms you’ll often come across are GPA and CGPA. They sound similar, but they’re not the same.

What is GPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) shows your performance in a single semester or term.

 In simple words:

It tells how you performed during a specific period, not your entire course.

Example:

If you score:

  • Subject 1: 8
  • Subject 2: 7
  • Subject 3: 9

Then,
GPA = (8 + 7 + 9) ÷ 3 = 8.0

Where is GPA used?

  • Colleges abroad (like USA, Canada)
  • Semester-wise evaluation

What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) shows your overall academic performance across all semesters.

In simple words:

It’s the average of all your GPAs.

Example:

If your GPAs are:

  • Semester 1: 8
  • Semester 2: 7.5
  • Semester 3: 8.5

Then, CGPA = (8 + 7.5 + 8.5) ÷ 3 = 8.0

How to Convert GPA to CGPA

There’s no universal formula, but generally:

  • CGPA = Average of all GPAs

CBSE Formula (CGPA to Percentage):

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

Grading Scales You Should Know

India (CBSE / Many Universities)

  • Usually 10-point scale (0–10)

Abroad (USA, etc.)

  • Usually 4-point scale (0–4)

Always check the grading system before converting scores.

Why GPA and CGPA Matter

Both are important for:

  • College admissions (India & abroad)
  • Scholarships
  • Job placements
  • Academic performance tracking

Common Mistakes Students Make

  • Thinking GPA = CGPA
  • Using wrong conversion formulas
  • Ignoring grading scale differences
  • Not tracking semester performance
