Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain was born into a rich family. Though she knew to read and write Urdu, she was not allowed to learn English and Bangla. In those days it was a supertitious belief that learning Enlish would expose girls to new ideas. But she managed to learn English with the help of her elder brother. She wrote a wonderful story titled Sultana’s Dream in 1905. According to this story, a woman character whose nae is Sultan who reaches a place called ladyland . Lady land is a place where women had full freedom to study, work, and create inventons like controlling rain from the clouds and flying air cars. In this ladyland the men had been sent into seclusion since they were defeated by the brain-power of women. This is how the story Suldana’s Dream ends.

Rashasundari Devi was born in west Bengal innthe year 1800. She was a house wife from a rich land lord family. At that time it was believed that if a woman learnt to read and write, she would bring bad luck to her hauband and bcome a widow. Despite this she taught herself to read and write in secret after her marriage. When she was 60 year- old, she wrote her autobiography in Bangla. Her book titled Amar Jiban is the first known autobiography written by an Indian woman.

Ramabai Pandita Ramabai was born on 23rd April1858, in Maharashtra. She was an eminent Indian social reformer and activist. She championed the cause of women’s education. She was a self – made in the field of education. She was given the title ‘ Pandita’ because she could read and write Sanskrit. It is very significant to note that women were not allowed to gain knowledge at that time. Her major contribution for women’s education was that she established a mission in Khedagaon in Pune in 1898. The mission provided education for widows and poor women and taught them not only to become literate but to be independent . They were trained in carpentary, running a printing press.
