When you add water to calcium oxide (CaO)?

A vigorous exothermic reaction occurs, producing calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) with significant heat release:

CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + Heat

This is called "slaking of lime." The mixture heats up, hisses, and steams.
