- Chlorine is an electronegative atom. The atomic number is 17 and has a configuration of 2,8,8,7. Addition of one electron in the outermost shell will make octet. It acquire by sharing with another chlorine atom and form chlorine There will be a strong bond formation in between the two chlorine atoms and the bond is called covalent bond. Therefore the electronic configuration will become2,8,8. Thus it become stable
