Answer

The standard unit of electric power is the watt (W), named after Scottish inventor James Watt. Larger quantities are expressed in kilowatts (kW = 1,000 watts), megawatts (MW = 1,000,000 watts), or gigawatts (GW = 1,000,000,000 watts). For very small power levels, milliwatts (mW = 0.001 watts) are used. In electrical billing, you'll often see kilowatt-hours (kWh), which represents energy consumed over time rather than instantaneous power.
