Answer

Taxonomy is the science of identifying, naming and categorising organisms based on several characters. Several systems of classification has been developed. Carolous linnaeus gave the Two kingdom classification which grouped organisms into plants or animals. Ernst Hackel gave the third kingdom Protista. Kingdoms are largest categories. This was followed by Copeland who introduced Monera, the kingdom of prokaryotes. Whittaker gave the 5 kingdoms classification which added fungi and was followed for quite some time and still followed around the world. Whittakers classification used evolution as the criteria as well. Carl Woese used 16s rRNA sequences to give his three domain classification system which divided Monerans(prokaryotes) into two domains Bacteria and Archea. Eukrya comprised the oter kingdoms; Protista, fungi, plantae and animalia. Over time taxonomy has improved given new technological advances that allow us to understand the origins and evolution of life better. FAQ What is taxonomy class 11?
