(iii) Short diffusion distances:
 Living cells in plants are located close to the surface or have access to air spaces. In stems, cells are organized in thin layers with lenticels for gas exchange. Parenchyma cells create an interconnected air space network.

Thus, plants efficiently manage respiration without specialized organs.
