Answer

LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas, a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases—primarily propane and butane—used as fuel for cooking, heating, and vehicles, stored and transported in liquid form under moderate pressure in steel cylinders or tanks. At normal atmospheric pressure and temperature, these gases exist in gaseous state, but when subjected to moderate pressure (typically 2-8 atmospheres) or slight cooling, they liquefy, reducing their volume by approximately 250 times, making storage and transportation practical and economical. This property makes LPG an efficient and portable energy source that has become the primary cooking fuel for millions of households worldwide, particularly in developing countries where it has replaced traditional biomass fuels like wood and dung.

LPG offers several advantages: it burns cleanly with minimal soot and pollutants compared to coal or wood, provides instant heat with easily controllable flame intensity, requires less storage space than equivalent energy in wood or coal, and produces no residue or ash requiring disposal. In India, the government's Ujjwala Yojana scheme has distributed millions of free LPG connections to economically disadvantaged households, significantly improving indoor air quality and women's health by reducing smoke exposure during cooking. LPG is also used in vehicles (LPG-converted cars) as an alternative to petrol, offering fuel cost savings and lower emissions, though requiring special conversion kits and cylinder installation. The fuel is distributed through a network of bottling plants and authorized distributors who deliver cylinders to consumers or operate refilling stations. Safety considerations include ensuring cylinders are in good condition, checking for gas leaks using soap solution (never using flames), maintaining ventilation when using LPG, and understanding emergency procedures. The distinctive smell added to LPG (which is naturally odorless) through mercaptan additives helps detect leaks quickly, preventing potential accidents from gas accumulation.
