Is CO2 safe to drink?
GeneralClass 12AllAnswered 27 Mar 2026
Answer
CO2 itself (as carbonation in beverages) is safe to consume. The tingling sensation in carbonated drinks comes from dissolved CO2 forming weak carbonic acid. Excessive consumption might cause bloating or belching, but carbonation is generally harmless. Industrial CO2 gas should not be inhaled directly.
