How do you multiply two rational numbers?

Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.

Formula: (a/b) × (c/d) = (a × c)/(b × d)

Example:

2/3 × 5/7 = (2 × 5)/(3 × 7) = 10/21

With negatives:

(-3/4) × (2/5) = (-3 × 2)/(4 × 5) = -6/20 = -3/10

Rule for signs:

  • Positive × Positive = Positive
  • Negative × Negative = Positive
  • Positive × Negative = Negative
