Answer

Guard cells are specialized epidermal cells that regulate stomatal aperture (pore).

Structural Features:

Shape Variation:

  • Dicots:Bean-shaped (kidney-shaped)
  • Monocots (Grasses):Dumb-bell shaped (with bulbous ends and narrow middle)

Cellular Characteristics:

  • Living cells with nucleus and cytoplasm
  • Contain chloroplasts (unique among epidermal cells) for starch-sugar interconversion
  • Unevenly thickened cell walls:
    • Inner wall (towards pore): Thick and inelastic
    • Outer wall (towards epidermis): Thin and elastic
  • Radial arrangement of cellulose microfibrils in the cell wall

Physiological Mechanism:

Stomatal Opening (Daytime):

  1. Light triggers photosynthesis in guard cell chloroplasts
  2. Starch → Glucose (increases osmotic concentration)
  3. Water enters via osmosis → guard cells become turgid
  4. Thin outer wall expands more than thick inner wall
  5. Cells curve outward → stomatal pore opens

Stomatal Closing (Night):

  1. Absence of light → glucose → starch (decreases osmotic concentration)
  2. Water exits → guard cells become flaccid
  3. Cells straighten → pore closes

Functional Importance:

  • Gas exchange (CO₂ intake for photosynthesis, O₂ release)
  • Transpiration regulation (water loss control)
  • Thermoregulation (cooling via evaporation)

Associated Cells:Subsidiary cells (accessory cells) surround guard cells and provide support.
