Desert
A desert is a barren landscape region receiving very little precipitation—typically less than 250 millimeters (10 inches) annually—resulting in harsh conditions where specialized plants and animals have adapted to survive extreme water scarcity. Deserts cover approximately one-third of Earth's land surface and exist on every continent, ranging from hot deserts like the Sahara in Africa (the world's largest hot desert) and the Thar Desert in India, to cold deserts like the Gobi in Asia and the Great Basin in North America, and even polar deserts like Antarctica (technically the world's largest desert due to minimal precipitation despite all the ice).
Deserts form through various mechanisms: some occur in rain shadows of mountain ranges where moisture-laden winds drop rain on one side, leaving the leeward side dry; others exist in subtropical high-pressure zones where descending air prevents cloud formation; and coastal deserts like the Atacama form where cold ocean currents cool air and prevent moisture from reaching land. Contrary to popular perception, not all deserts are sandy—many feature rocky terrain, gravel plains, or even snowy landscapes. Desert ecosystems support specially adapted life forms: cacti and succulents store water in their tissues, animals like camels can survive long periods without water, and many desert creatures are nocturnal to avoid daytime heat. Deserts play important roles in Earth's climate system and house valuable mineral resources, though they face challenges from desertification (expansion of desert-like conditions due to human activities and climate change). Understanding deserts helps us appreciate extreme environments and the remarkable adaptations of life to challenging conditions.
