Answer

The nucleus is the cell's control center, containing genetic material (DNA) organized into chromosomes that direct all cellular activities. Enclosed by a double-layered nuclear membrane with pores, it regulates gene expression and coordinates cell growth, metabolism, and reproduction. The nucleolus within the nucleus produces ribosomes, essential for protein synthesis. Without the nucleus, cells cannot reproduce or maintain long-term function, though mature red blood cells demonstrate that short-term survival is possible in specialized cases.

The cytoplasm is the gel-like substance filling the cell between the nucleus and cell membrane, composed of water, salts, proteins, and organic molecules. It serves as the site for most metabolic activities and houses all cell organelles suspended in the cytosol. Vital processes including glycolysis, protein synthesis, and various enzymatic reactions occur here, making it the functional workspace where cellular operations are executed.

The cell membrane (plasma membrane) is a selectively permeable boundary that separates the cell's interior from the external environment. Composed of a phospholipid bilayer embedded with proteins, it controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell through diffusion, osmosis, and active transport. Beyond this gatekeeper function, it facilitates cell recognition, signaling, and communication with other cells. The membrane's selective permeability is crucial for maintaining cellular homeostasis, protecting cellular contents, and enabling the cell to respond to environmental changes.
