Answer

Variation in a different form or combination of characteristic that is found in our population. We refer to these variants as trait. Variations can arise due to various reasons

  • Copying fo DNA is done by enzyme DNA polymerase. Being a biochemical reaction, it cannot have 100 accuracy. The errors when made are attempted by the enzyme’s exonuclease activity but even then several discrepancies seep in
  • Variation could result from the transfer of DNA between organisms as in bacterium
  • Sexual reproduction uses DNA mixing from 2 parents to increase variations
  • Sexual reproduction at some point of time must include meiosis. The prophase I of meiosis includes an event call the crossing over which exchanges lengths of DNA between the non-sister chromatids. This increases variation
  • Further during the sorting of chromosomes from 2 parental sets into gametes, there could be 2n combinations of paternal and maternal chromosomes that could be sorted into gametes from just one parents. This further increases when we talk about 2 parents contributing the DNA

Variations, produce altered designs. These designs may or may not prove advantageous to the organism. If it does, it might help the organism survive better and spread in population.
