What is the most confronting and challenging question for the knowledge management community?

The most confronting question is: "How do we capture and transfer tacit knowledge the knowledge people carry in their heads and hands before it walks out the door?"

Why this is so difficult:

• Explicit knowledge (documents, manuals, databases) is easy to store and share
• Tacit knowledge built from experience, intuition, and practice resists documentation
• Experts often cannot articulate what they know because much of it is automatic

Related hard questions the field wrestles with:

• How do you measure the value of knowledge?
• How do you motivate people to share what they know rather than hoard it?
• How do you prevent information overload while ensuring nothing critical is lost?
• Is AI a replacement for human knowledge management, or just a tool within it?

The deeper tension: knowledge lives in people, not systems. Any system that tries to manage it is already one step removed from the real thing.
