Answer

Endocytosis is a cellular process that brings any substances from the outer environment inside the cell. Through this process, a cell procures the nutrients and essential elements required for its growth and multiplication from the external environment. A cell also engulfed the foreign harmful substances and further neutralized them. In endocytosis, the cell membrane folds itself so that they can capture the material to be engulfed in their form of vesicles. Later this vesicular structure pinches off from the membrane inside the cell.

Endocytosis pathways can be studied under four different headings:

  • Clathrin-mediated endocytosis: In this type of endocytosis, vesicles are formed coated with the cytosolic protein clathrin. Clathrin-coated vesicles are found in cells and form domains of the plasma membrane termed clathrin-coated pits.
  • Caveolae: It is a type of non-clathrin-coated plasma membrane buds, which exist on the surface of many, but not all cell types. Instead, they consist of the cholesterol-binding protein caveolin and bilayer of cholesterol and glycolipids.
  • Pinocytosis: Such a type of endocytosis is formed at the region of the plasma membrane where extracellular fluids enter the cell. For this, plasma membranes invaginate to form pockets, which then pinches off into the cell to form a vesicle.
  • Phagocytosis: In this type of endocytosis, cells bind and engulf particular matter that is larger than 0.75 µm in diameter, such as small-sized dust particles, cell debris etc. Such a type of endocytosis formed by WBC occurs at the time of infection of germs.

Following are the function of the endocytosis:

Acquire nutrients for growth and repair of the cell

  • Stop the entry of toxin or unwanted pathogens
  • Inside the cell and finally neutralize them
  • It also eradicate the old and non-functional cells

FAQs.

Q1. What do you understand by endocytosis?

Ans1. Endocytosis is a process in which cells take different substances from the outer environment by engulfing them in the form of the vesicle.

Q2. What are the different pathways of endocytosis formation?

Ans2. There are four different pathways of endocytosis formation that are, clathrin-mediated endocytosis, caveolae, pinocytosis and phagocytosis.
