What is a living cell?

A living cell is the smallest unit of life capable of performing all processes necessary for survival, including metabolism, growth, reproduction, response to stimuli, and maintaining internal equilibrium (homeostasis). Cells represent life's fundamental organizational unit.

Living cells possess several defining characteristics distinguishing them from non-living matter. They maintain organized internal structures enclosed by membranes that regulate what enters and exits. They extract energy from nutrients through metabolic processes and use this energy for growth, maintenance, and reproduction. Cells respond to environmental changes through various mechanisms—muscle cells contract when stimulated, immune cells attack pathogens, and plant cells grow toward light. All living cells contain genetic material (DNA) encoding instructions for cellular functions and inheritance. They maintain homeostasis, regulating internal conditions like pH and ion concentrations despite external fluctuations. Living cells can reproduce, either through division (creating identical daughter cells) or through sexual reproduction (combining genetic material). Cells are categorized as prokaryotic (simpler cells without membrane-bound nuclei, like bacteria) or eukaryotic (complex cells with nuclei and specialized organelles, including all animal, plant, and fungal cells). Size ranges dramatically—human red blood cells measure about 7 micrometers in diameter, while some nerve cells extend over a meter. The concept of living cells has practical importance: antibiotics target bacterial cells while avoiding human cells, cancer treatments aim to destroy abnormally dividing cells, and regenerative medicine seeks to replace damaged cells with healthy ones. Understanding what makes cells "alive" helps distinguish living organisms from viruses (which require host cells to reproduce) and informs fundamental questions about life's origin and nature.
