What does family mean to you? How would you define it?

Traditional definition: Parents, children, and extended relatives bound by biological or legal ties.

Modern expanded definition:

• Chosen family close friends who provide love and loyalty of biological family
• Single-parent families
• Blended families (step-parents, step-siblings)
• Same-sex parent families
• Adoptive families legal and emotional bonds without biological connection

What functionally defines a family:

• Unconditional support being there across life's successes and failures
• Shared history and identity common narrative, traditions, belonging
• Responsibility caring for each other across different life stages
• Safety — physical and emotional security
• Transmission of values passing beliefs, language, culture, and identity to the next generation
