Lakshmi Bai
Rani Lakshmi Bai, also known as the Rani of Jhansi, was one of the most courageous and iconic figures in India's First War of Independence in 1857 against British colonial rule. Born as Manikarnika Tambe in 1828 in Varanasi, she married Raja Gangadhar Rao of Jhansi and became the queen of the princely state. After her husband's death and the British refusal to recognize her adopted son as heir under the Doctrine of Lapse, she became a symbol of resistance when she refused to surrender Jhansi to the British, reportedly declaring "Main apni Jhansi nahi doongi" (I will not give up my Jhansi).
During the 1857 uprising, Rani Lakshmi Bai led her troops with extraordinary bravery, personally participating in battles, defending Jhansi against British forces, and later joining other rebel leaders in continued resistance. Contemporary British accounts, despite being from opponents, acknowledged her military skills, courage, and leadership. She died in battle on June 18, 1858, in Gwalior, fighting against the British until her last breath, reportedly dressed as a man and with her sword in hand. Her legacy endures as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and women's empowerment in India. Rani Lakshmi Bai inspired countless freedom fighters who followed, and she remains a revered figure in Indian history, commemorated in literature, films, and textbooks as one of the greatest warrior queens who stood against colonial oppression.
