In the Indian Navy, what is the full form of INS?

INS = Indian Naval Ship

It is the prefix used before the name of every commissioned vessel in the Indian Navy, equivalent to:

• HMS (His/Her Majesty's Ship) in the British Royal Navy
• USS (United States Ship) in the US Navy

Examples:

• INS Vikrant: India's first indigenously built aircraft carrier, commissioned 2022
• INS Vikramaditya: India's operational aircraft carrier
• INS Arihant: India's first nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine
• INS Chennai: Guided missile destroyer

The prefix "INS" is used only for commissioned warships. Ships under construction or not yet commissioned do not carry it.
