Answer

India has 28 states and 8 union territories as of 2024, following the reorganization that created Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir as separate union territories in 2019. The most recent additions to India's states were Telangana in 2014 (carved out of Andhra Pradesh) and the earlier creation of Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh in 2000. Each state has its own elected government with a Chief Minister and legislative assembly, giving states significant autonomy in matters like education, healthcare, agriculture, and law enforcement within the framework of India's federal structure.

The union territories, which include Delhi (National Capital Territory), Puducherry, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh, are directly administered by the central government, though some have partial legislative powers. This division between states and union territories reflects India's diverse administrative needs, with union territories typically being smaller regions or areas of strategic importance. The current configuration represents decades of linguistic and administrative reorganization, beginning with the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, which redrew state boundaries primarily along linguistic lines to better reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of India's population.
