Explain corpus luteum formation and function in simple short points

The corpus luteum forms after ovulation from the ruptured Graafian follicle and secretes progesterone.

Corpus Luteum

• Ovary – female organ where ova and follicles develop
• Primordial follicle – earliest stage of follicle
• Primary follicle – developing follicle around an oocyte
• Secondary follicle – further developed follicle
• Oocyte – immature egg cell
• Graafian follicle – mature follicle before ovulation
• Ovum / egg – released female gamete
• Ovulation – release of the ovum from the ovary
• Developing corpus luteum – structure formed after ovulation
• Corpus luteum – yellow body that secretes progesterone
• Degenerating corpus luteum or corpus albicans – scar-like tissue formed if pregnancy does not occur
