Distinguish between the unitary and federal forms of government.

Ans. Governments are classified on the basis of level of government and division of powers between them. Thus, government is divided into two forms – Unitary and Federal.

The following are the differences between the two :

Unitary Form

Federal Form

1. A unitary government is a single integrated authority. All powers are in the hand of central government

2. In unitary form of government the central government is supreme.

3. Power can be change or reduced in unitary form of government.

1. Federation is a device towards union. There are, therefore, two levels of government viz-the central Government and the state governments.

2. In a federation, state governments, are not more than agents of the central government.
