Ans. On the basis of the type of occupation practiced by the most of the inhabitants, a settlement may be rural or urban.

Rural settlement: Most of the people are engaged in agriculture, fishing, forestry etc. The major part of the population is involved in the primary activity. The necessity of forming a village settlement arises from occupational considerations.

Urban settlement: Most of the people are engaged in activities such as manufacturing and trading in which the products are derived from the primary activities. Or they may be engaged in tertiary activities. Towns and cities are example of urban settlement.
