What is an embryo?

An embryo is the early multicellular stage of development after fertilisation. In humans, the embryo stage lasts from fertilisation to approximately 8 weeks, during which basic body structures (brain, heart, limbs) begin to form. After 8 weeks, it is called a foetus.
