answered 2 Jun 2026How does the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) regulate blood pressure and volume?
A.VERIFIED ANSWERfact-checked by tutors
A fall in blood pressure in the afferent arteriole stimulates the juxtaglomerular apparatus (JGA) to release renin. Renin converts angiotensinogen into angiotensin I, which is converted to angiotensin II by ACE. Angiotensin II causes vasoconstriction and stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete aldosterone. Aldosterone increases Na⁺ and water reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule, raising blood volume and pressure. When blood pressure rises, the JGA is inhibited.
